Fretwork Pewter Bangles

Pewter is an amazing material to work with, things that are easy in silver are tricky in pewter. It doesn’t solder like silver at all. Silver solder will run towards your flame, pewter will run away from it! Hover your flame a second to long and your piece is destroyed. While of course it’s possible to melt a silver pendant into a blob it takes a lot longer.

I’m still working through various designs for our pewter bangles (come and see some of them this Wednesday at the Sutton Bonington Farmers market… details below) While I can sketch out lots of ideas it hard to know what we can actually take into production right now, because we’re not planning to cast any pewter bangles and are instead forming them from sheet (using mammers and mandrels) we have some flexibility, but i’d still like to settle on a few signature designs for these larger, chunkier pewter bangles.

Because pewter is softer than silver or gold the bangles can’t be made into narrow bands. They would bend very easily. So instead i’ve opted for the wider “cuff” look. In this photo I’ve cut sections of the bangle out, but it’s still very sturdy. I really like the bangle with holes… a bit retro 70′s space age! “Moon Bangle” is what i’d like to call it!! The other bangle has two hearts cut into it.

Our last show of the year is at the Sutton Bonington Farmers Market on Wednesday 7th from 11-3:30 pm
